De Witt & Co. :: Paper Dolls
Welcome to our "Paper Dolls" department! A virtually lost form of entertainment, early paper dolls were not only for children, but for the advertiser, as well. Any early manufacturer of apparel surely had paper dolls as part of their advertising campaign. Paper dolls were commonly found in various magazines, and they need not be fashion oriented, although your more popular fashion magazines all had them at one time or another. Newspapers went through a period where virtually all of the comic sections were incomplete without a weekly paper doll inclusion. Advertisers used paper dolls, sometimes as a premium, included with their product. One may ask why manufacturers needed such a seemingly insignificant promotion... the answer lies in today's cereal aisle at the supermarket. Just count all the cartoon characters!
